The SURFboard® SB8200 – Get up to speed, with speed

Picture2It’s here! The SURFboard® SB8200—the latest member of the legendary SURFboard family has arrived!

We’re incredibly excited about the SB8200. It’s designed to deliver the fastest available* broadband service, both now and well into the future. It will let you access the most demanding services—like Virtual Reality, streaming Ultra HD, and high-performance gaming—with bandwidth to spare, and makes every day web browsing and streaming smoother than ever.

We believe it’s going to be a real game-changer for your home network. To prove it, we going to explore some of the unique features of the SB8200, gigabit internet and DOCSIS® 3.1.

What is DOCSIS, and why does it matter?

Simply put, DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) is a standard that internet providers, like Comcast and Cox, and hardware manufacturers, like ARRIS, use to make sure their systems can communicate properly and provide you with home internet.

ARRIS was an early pioneer in the DOCSIS standard, which is used around the world to facilitate fast and reliable internet connections.

What is DOCSIS 3.1, and how is it related to gigabit speeds?

DOCSIS has evolved dramatically over time. Each new version has allowed more data to be transmitted, which leads to higher internet speeds in our homes. DOCSIS 3.1 is the latest version of the DOCSIS standard. It allows for download speeds up to 10+ gigabits per second. That’s 10 times faster than DOCSIS 3.0, the previous version of the standard!

So, when we say that the S8200 is compatible with DOCSIS 3.1, it means that it can relay the fastest speeds available—today, and for a long time to come. You can find more information on DOCSIS on another one of our handy blogs, here.

What’s the advantage of gigabit speed?

A one-gigabit connection is the same as a 1000-megabit connection. That’s about 20 times faster than the average internet speed in the US today, according to Speedtest.net. In other words, gigabit connections are very, very fast.

Gigabit connections will make everything we already do online—browsing, using social media, streaming video—smooth and instantaneous. It also makes entirely new, internet-based technologies and experiences possible, in much the same way that broadband permitted services like Facebook and Netflix.

With gigabit speeds, we’ll see everything from live streaming to virtual reality headsets and ultra-high definition TV, as well as other technologies we have yet to even dream of.

Which cable companies have approved the SB8200 for use, and will the device work with DOCSIS 3.0?

We’re very excited that Comcast and Cox have approved the SB8200 modem for use by their subscribers. And we expect more major cable companies to approve it soon!

DOCSIS 3.1 is being quickly rolled out across the US. In the meantime, the SB8200 is fully backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0. To check availability in your area, please call your service provider.

What are the standout features of the device?

The SB8200’s compact design, combines a 2×2 DOCSIS 3.1 modem with a 32×8 DOCSIS 3.0 modem, meaning it supports two download and two upload DOCSIS 3.1 channels, plus 32 download and 8 upload DOCSIS 3.0 channels for the fastest and smoothest internet available. Simply put, the more channels, the better.

And here’s a big one: it has two Gigabit Ethernet ports. This essentially doubles the throughput, when you compare the SB8200 to devices with only one port. It makes the SB8200 far more versatile. With one port, consumers only have the option of wiring a router to their modem. With a second port, users can create two separate gigabit-speed networks. Separate networks can be used for different purposes; for example: work and play. We advise subscribers to check with their service provider to ensure they can be allotted a second static IP address for enabling use of the second port.

Users also have the option of wiring certain devices directly to the modem, increasing the quality and consistency of that device’s internet connection, while also directly connecting a router. This is a fantastic option for particularly high-performance and data-thirsty devices such as gaming consoles.

How do you provision the SB8200?

Provisioning the SB8200 is very straightforward. We have prepared this how-to video to guide you through the simple process.

Can you tell us which chips are in the SB8200?

It’s company policy to not discuss which chips are in our devices. However, we are committed to using the very best hardware in all of our products.

Where can I buy the SB8200?

The SB8200 is available for purchase right now through Amazon and the ARRIS store. We expect it to be available at other major retailers in the coming months.

*Actual rates may vary dependent on a number of factors including, but not limited to: the services offered by your cable service provider, network traffic, computer equipment, type of server, number of connections to server, and availability of internet router(s).

How to fall in love with your Wi-Fi® this Valentine’s Day

Your significant other isn’t the only thing that deserves attention this Valentine’s Day.

Your Wi-Fi® isSocial Media Vday now a vital element of your home life. Show it some TLC, and it’ll love you back by not ruining your night in front of a romcom.

These three tips will give you Wi-Fi to make Cupid proud.

See other people – You don’t have to be faithful to your gateway if you can get better performance from someone else. Not all gateways are created equal. You can stay with your current service provider but, investigate in a new gateway that will boost the service you’re currently receiving. Look for options with more download and upload channels to boost speeds.

Choose a better position – Moving things to the bedroom? Not so fast! If your gateway is all the way downstairs, you might not get the streaming quality you expect. Make sure your gateway is in the heart of your home to get the best coverage throughout, even in the bedroom.

Set the mood – When you achieve full coverage in every room of your house, you’ll have more options to connect more devices, apps and services. For example, adding connected lighting to your home will make use of your enhanced broadband. And by using voice commands, you’ll be able to get the lighting just right without breaking the mood by fiddling with buttons and menus.

It’s Valentine’s Day after all, so why not become more affectionate with better broadband and entertainment without the flaws?

Love, ARRIS.

Race preview: Dividing and conquering in the Great Lakes

This weekend, Carl Edwards returns to the Irish Hills of Michigan for the Pure Michigan 400, CqrqJCyWgAACYeIwhile Daniel Suárez heads to Elkhard Lake in Wisconsin to close out the Road Course portion of the XFINITY Series.

Daniel will run on Saturday, taking the #19 ARRIS Toyota Camry through its paces on the legendary 4-mile, 14-turn circuit at Road America. The road course, which comprises both left and right turns, promises to offer an exciting start to the weekend.

On Sunday, Carl Edwards will take the wheel of his #19 ARRIS Toyota Camry—wearing its new SURFboard® wrap featuring NewEgg—for 200 laps of Michigan International’s 2-mile speedway. He’ll be looking for a victory to add to his nine top-5 finishes and two wins at the track.

Here’s a preview of this weekend’s ARRIS Racing lineup:

NASCAR XFINITY Series – Road America Road Course

  • Daniel Suárez in the #19 ARRIS Toyota Camry
  • Live TV coverage: Saturday, August 27th at 3:00 p.m. Eastern on NBCSN, Sirius XM Channel 90, and MRN Radio

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series – Pure Michigan 400

  • Carl Edwards in the #19 ARRIS Toyota Camry
  • Live TV coverage: Sunday, August 28th at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on NBCSN, Sirius XM Channel 90, and MRN Radio

Carl Edwards: ”I am really looking forward to the Michigan race.  The lower down force package should provide some great racing there, especially the second time around, there’s a little more rubber on the track, and possibly some higher temperatures to widen out the groove.  We’ve been having a lot of fun. We’ve been fast, been qualifying well and racing well.  Michigan is a place that really tests every part of your team. You have to have great engines, which we do from TRD. You have to have great cars and bodies, which we do. The pit crew has to be on their game. My guys have been doing great lately. You have to make good calls the whole day.  Dave Rogers and I will go there and just keep doing what we’ve been doing and hopefully we get ARRIS a win.  I have a couple wins in the cup car and Xfinity series.  It’s always been a really cool place to go.  There is a lot of pride on the line in Michigan because it’s the domestic manufacturers’ backyard.  If you can win there, you know you’ve done a good job. I would be really proud to put Toyota in victory lane.”

Daniel Suárez: “We’ve had a tough couple of races the past two weeks, so I’m really looking forward to getting back on the track this weekend and behind the wheel of my ARRIS Camry. Road America is one of the best tracks not only in NASCAR, but in the country, so I’m really excited and looking forward to the weekend.  We’ve had some really good meetings this week and I think Scott and the team have a great game plan as we moved forward. We will work hard on Friday to find the right set up not only for the race on Saturday, but also qualifying on Friday evening as track position will be really important.”

Good luck, Carl and Daniel!

Race Preview: Tackling the “Tricky Triangle”

We’re at Pocono Raceway this weekend in Pennsylvania for two days of spirited racing around 20160603_141817_resizedthe famously tight corners of the 2.5-mile tri-oval. Carl Edwards returns to add a third to his two prior wins at the track, while this visit will mark Daniel Suarez’s first start at Pocono.

Daniel will start things off in the #19 Toyota Camry in Saturday’s inaugural Pocono Green 250. ARRIS Racing will host some lucky employees that day during the XFINITY series. Then on Sunday, Carl will be rocking the new SURFboard paint scheme behind the wheel of the #19 Toyota Camry in the Sprint Cup’s Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400.

Here’s a preview of this weekend’s ARRIS Racing lineup:

NASCAR XFINITY Series – Pocono Green 250

  • Daniel Suarez in the #19 ARRIS Toyota Camry
  • Live TV coverage: Saturday, June 3rd at 1:00 p.m. Eastern on FOX, Sirius XM Channel 90, and MRN Radio

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series – Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400

  • Carl Edwards in the #19 ARRIS Toyota Camry
  • Live TV coverage: Sunday, June 4th at 1:00 p.m. Eastern on FOX Sports 1, Sirius XM Channel 90, and MRN Radio

Carl Edwards: “Pocono is obviously a unique racetrack.  It’s unlike any other track we go to.  It’s a real tough track to get right. I’ve had some success there with a couple wins.  I enjoy racing there.  It’s as close to a road course as an oval can get.  It has three distinct corners, has a long straightaways and every part of the team comes into play.  You got to have a great engine, you got to have a really good setup and you got to be able to adjust.  You have to drive well and restarts are important.  When you do well there it means something, because you have to do everything right.  Hopefully we can go there and get our third win of the season.  We have ARRIS on board and we would like to get them to victory lane.  After last week we had a strong run and I had some speeding penalties, so I need to keep the racing on the race track.”

Daniel Suarez: ”I’m looking forward to the weekend and making my first start at Pocono in the ARRIS Camry. I’ve done some work in the Toyota Simulator the last few weeks to learn as much as possible, and Scott (Graves) and I have had some good meetings and I think we have a good game plan going into the weekend. Toyota Racing has been on a hot streak as of late, and I would like nothing more than to get my first win and continue their winning streak this weekend at Pocono.”

Follow us this weekend on Twitter @ARRIS for updates and promos. Good luck, Carl and Daniel!
